Iceland’s roads are easier with two pedals.
Most campers in Iceland are manual, and most visitors from North America, Australia and much of Asia have never driven one. Steep gravel hill starts, single-lane bridges, stop-and-go in Reykjavík and twelve-hour driving days are no place to learn. An automatic lets you watch the road – and the weather – instead of the gear lever.
Hill starts on gravel
Half of Iceland’s interesting roads are loose gravel on a slope. An automatic with 4WD pulls away cleanly every time; a stalled manual on a gravel hill is the classic first-day mistake.
Less fatigue, more Iceland
Ring Road days are long and the weather changes hourly. Two pedals mean less to think about when the wind picks up or the road turns to washboard.
Everyone can drive
A second driver is free with us. With an automatic, both of you can actually take the wheel, which matters on a two-week trip.
No price penalty for 4WD
Automatic rentals in Iceland are usually front-wheel-drive city cars. Ours are a 4WD SUV approved for F-roads and an AWD electric SUV – automatic without giving up capability.
Two automatic campers – and the manual alternative.
Both automatics are all-wheel drive and sleep inside the car. Pick by group size and by how far off the pavement you want to go.
BYD Seal U – Automatic 4WD, sleeps 4 (from April 2027)
A new petrol automatic 4WD SUV with a bed for two inside and a hardshell rooftop tent (210 × 130 cm, about 150 cm headroom) for two more. Five seats by day, approved for F-roads that are officially open – an automatic that takes a family of four into the highlands. Available from 1 April 2027.
See the BYD Seal U →Leapmotor C10 AWD – Electric automatic, sleeps 2
All-wheel-drive electric SUV with a bed for two, Camp Mode heating all night on battery and a 230V outlet for your gear. 437 km WLTP range, about 270 km on the highway in winter. For the Ring Road, paved and normal gravel roads – not approved for F-roads.
See the electric camper →Dacia Duster – Manual 4×4, sleeps 2 or 4
Happy with a gearbox? The Duster is our best seller: a manual 4×4 with a bed inside, optional rooftop tent and F-road approval, usually at a lower price than the automatics. Everything about it is on the Duster page.

The honest comparison for Iceland.
We rent both, so we have no reason to oversell either. This is what actually differs on Icelandic roads.
Read: automatic vs manual camper in Iceland →Price: an automatic camper costs more per day than the equivalent manual, in Iceland as everywhere. Winter and shoulder season narrow the gap.
Capability: it depends on the car, not the gearbox. Our BYD Seal U automatic is 4WD and F-road approved; most automatic rentals in Iceland are 2WD and are not.
Hills and gravel: automatics win. No clutch to burn on a steep gravel start, and modern automatics hold a low gear downhill when you select it.
Fuel: the gap has closed. A modern automatic uses about the same as a manual; the electric C10 costs considerably less per kilometre to run.
Insurance: identical. CDW is included in every rental and the same Premium and Platinum covers are available on all campers.
Yes, an automatic can go to the highlands – if it is the right one.
F-roads are Iceland’s mountain tracks: unpaved, often steep, sometimes with unbridged rivers. They open from late June or July and close again in September, and they legally require a 4×4.
The BYD Seal U automatic is approved for F-roads that are officially open, exactly like our Dusters.
The electric Leapmotor C10 stays on paved roads and normal gravel roads.
Check umferdin.is and safetravel.is on the morning you drive. Opening dates change every year with the snow.
No insurance covers water damage – plan routes without river crossings. Off-road driving is illegal in Iceland.

A handful of the roughest tracks are always off-limits for our cars; the list is in your rental agreement.

Automatic, all-wheel drive and winter tyres.
Winter is where an automatic earns its keep: no clutch work on icy junctions and a drivetrain that meters power to all four wheels. The BYD Seal U runs on studded winter tyres from 1 November to 15 April, the C10 on Continental VikingContact 8 winter tyres, and both heat the cabin overnight – the BYD with the included 220V heater at campsites with electricity, the C10 on its own battery in Camp Mode. Winter is also when a camper is cheapest, and when the northern lights are out.
Everything you need is already in the car.
No hidden extras at pickup. Choose the free camping gear you want when you book and it is waiting in the camper.

Automatic camper rental in Iceland – questions
The things people ask before they book an automatic.
Do you have automatic campers in Iceland?
Yes, two. The BYD Seal U is a petrol automatic 4WD that sleeps four with a rooftop tent, available from 1 April 2027. The Leapmotor C10 is a fully electric all-wheel-drive automatic that sleeps two. Our Dacia Duster campers are manual.
Is an automatic camper more expensive in Iceland?
Per day, yes – automatics cost more than the equivalent manual everywhere in Iceland, and ours are also newer, larger cars. The gap is smallest in winter and shoulder season. Prices for your dates are shown live in the search above; booking direct and paying in full saves a further 5%.
Can I drive an automatic camper on F-roads?
With the BYD Seal U, yes – it is a 4WD approved for F-roads that are officially open, normally from late June or July to September. The electric C10 is not approved for F-roads. River crossings are never covered by insurance.
Is an automatic better than a manual for Iceland?
For most visitors, yes: hill starts on gravel, single-lane bridges and long days are easier with two pedals, and both drivers can share the driving. A manual costs less and is perfectly fine if you drive one at home. Capability depends on 4WD and clearance, not on the gearbox.
Which licence do I need for an automatic?
A full driving licence held for at least 12 months; drivers must be 20 or older. An automatic-only licence is accepted for both automatics. A second driver is free.
How many people sleep in the automatic campers?
Four in the BYD Seal U – two inside on the fold-out bed and two in the 210 × 130 cm rooftop tent. Two in the Leapmotor C10, inside the car.
Where do I pick up the camper?
At our self-service base at Flugvellir 15, 1.8 km from Keflavík Airport. Our free shuttle collects you at Arrivals and the drive takes three minutes. You get the lockbox code and instructions before pickup, so it works at any hour.
When can I book the BYD Seal U?
Now, for rentals from 1 April 2027. Choose your dates in the search above and the BYD Seal U appears with its price when it is available.
