Driving in Iceland

Yes, many roads in Iceland are gravel, and gravel damage is common. We recommend adding Gravel Protection insurance to avoid high repair costs.

Iceland’s strong winds can blow volcanic ash and sand, causing expensive paint and window damage. Sand & Ash Protection is highly recommended, especially for travel in spring and fall.

The Vaðlaheiðargöng Tunnel near Akureyri is the only toll road in Iceland. The toll must be paid online within 24 hours of passing through.

Only 4×4 campers are allowed on F-roads. You cannot drive regular campers on these roads.

Fuel & Maintenance

It depends on the model. Your rental agreement will specify if your camper uses diesel or gasoline.

Yes, you must return the camper with the same fuel level as when picked up.
